Zoo's & Captivity Breeding Suck, Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Elephant Exploitation, Elephant in the Room!

Rescues in progress & Rescue Completed Last year!
            Rosamond Gifford Zoo

Elephants do not deserve the lives they’re forced to live in captivity! Imprisoned behind metal bars, they do not thrive. Deprived of their natural habitats, and denied the deep social bonds that you and I know that elephants form, their lives are tragic and empty of positive experiences.

You know. I know it. And zoos know it too, though they won’t admit it!

Will you help us to continue our work to expose the “Big Lie” that elephants can survive and thrive in captivity? The lie that almost all zoos want you to believe?

Will you help us put an end to their suffering in zoos across the country?

Elephants like Mali sway in distress at Rosamond Gifford Zoo. She should be free. Instead, elephants are artificially inseminated and forced into pregnancies, paraded around for profit, made to endure unnatural living conditions and suffer untimely deaths. Terrible!

With your help we can expose the lie, expose zoo cruelty and liberate abused elephants from captivity. Our goal is to give elephants conditions that allow them to thrive — in large, spacious preserves that offer hundreds to thousands of acres of natural habitat and allow them to live fulfilling lives, as close as possible to what nature intended.

In January 2019 I let you know that poor suffering Asian elephant Mali at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo had given birth to a male calf, named Ajay. He was born after a forced pregnancy brought about by a series of invasive artificial insemination attempts. The Zoo hailed his birth as a triumph, placing him on exhibit five short months later.

On December 9, Rosamond Gifford Zoo announced that baby Ajay has died. It was just days before his second birthday. But worse was yet to come...

On December 11, the Zoo announced that Ajay’s five-year-old brother, Batu, had also died. Both succumbed to the Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes Virus (EEHV).

The rate of baby elephant deaths at this zoo — and, in fact, at all zoos — is unacceptable! If you agree, please help out in any way.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo forces baby elephants into existence simply because they’re a huge attendance draw. Their miserable lives in captivity don’t matter when there’s money to be made. High death rates can’t get in the way of zoo profits, so female elephants are chained and inseminated invasively against their will. Rosamond Gifford Zoo’s despicable treatment of these baby elephants — and their bereft parents Mali and Doc — landed the facility in #10th place on our list of the 10 Worst Zoos for Elephants in North America.

The fact is, all zoos are notoriously bad at keeping baby elephants alive. But they continue to breed them anyway. Zoos routinely use disturbing artificial insemination techniques on both male and female elephants in repeated attempts to produce babies.

“Captive breeding programs” are nothing more than a greedy ploy to drive ticket sales!

But there’s even more to be sick about...

Baby elephants form strong maternal bonds. Their complex and rich social lives with their family groups start the moment they are born. But zoos break up their social groups and transfer them far away. Many elephants suffer entirely alone, without even a single member of their own species!

Isolated zoo conditions are no way for any elephant to live. We must shut down all failing zoo exhibits! I agree! Don’t let baby elephants suffer any longer!

Bereft parents, Mali and Doc, should be sent to an accredited sanctuary where they will never be bred again. All zoo prisoners should be liberated so they can live lives of relative peace and comfort — where they never have to go on public display. It’s the kind of lives that elephants deserve. Give hope to imprisoned elephants.

            Emma's feet are excruciatingly painful.

Emma’s feet are so injured and in need of medical attention, she lies down every chance she gets just to avoid the pain. When forced to get up and work by her cruel owner, she rocks from side to side, lifting alternate feet like she’s standing on searing hot coals.

We know it has only been a couple of weeks since you helped us bring Jai to safety, but Emma needs us. We were working on getting Jai settled into his new home when we got an emergency call about her. The question was, can we help her too? When we heard about her situation and saw photos of her legs and feet, we knew we needed to help her immediately.

Our goal is to have her on her way to the hospital campus in less than a week. We know it is possible because we managed to do it with Jai, but we need your help. Will you please help Emma now?

Right now, innocent elephants are suffering extreme cruelty.

They face gruesome death and mutilation just for their ivory tusks. And helpless baby elephants are brutally kidnapped and held captive in chains for human amusement.

This must stop. We are working to create a world where no elephant is gunned down just to be carved into a sickening trophy. But we need your support. Will you help today to help us keep fighting for elephants and all animals in 2021?

Last year, Lady Freethinker's undercover investigation exposed the heartbreaking abuse at Mason Elephant Park, where chained, isolated elephants were forced to haul tourists around for profit.

We also amassed hundreds of thousands of petition signatures to fight poaching, trophy hunting, and cruel zoos.

And our news and campaign articles gained massive exposure, opening people's eyes to elephants' plight around the world. Will you help us keep working to save elephants from cruelty in the coming year? Elephants are counting on us.

            End Elephant Exploitation!

The plight of elephants as individuals and as representatives of their species has never been as dire as it is today, with elephants under siege by humans and threatened by extinction. Illegal ivory poaching, trophy hunting, habitat fragmentation and destruction and their capture for public display are greatly reducing what remains of elephant populations.

We have a proven commitment to ending elephant captivity and cruelty.

We couldn't carry out our life-saving work without your generous gifts. Please, consider making a donation to In Defense of Animals, and help us continue to fight against elephant exploitation. Your gift, no matter how big or small, will make a difference.

            End Elephant Exploitation!

In Defense of Animals is influencing zoos and circuses to retire captive elephants to accredited sanctuaries, and we're working to keep elephants in the wild.

Canada, Elephant Livers, Erika in Lush Forest, Jai's Chains, almost puking in Elephant in the Room!

            Elephants slaughtered for their livers

Our offices in East Africa are reporting that 12 elephants were slaughtered in Tanzania not just for their ivory but for their livers. To increase their profits, poachers are now touting the use of elephant livers as cures for liver cancer, cervical cancer, and ulcers.

This new wave of poaching is happening at exactly the same time wildlife protection budgets are being cut back due to COVID-19. We must stop this emerging threat immediately!

I am sure that you can understand why we're so concerned that your name is not yet on our double match donor list. We urgently need your help to protect elephants who are in greater danger than ever.

More about being killed for Elephant Livers:

It's with a heavy heart that I share this shocking and disturbing news: twelve elephants were slaughtered in Tanzania, and their livers were hacked out. Poachers are now claiming that elephant livers can cure liver cancer, cervical cancer, and ulcers.

This is alarming in the extreme and we need your immediate help. Your support has been critical in making significant headway against the ivory trade – but now, wildlife traffickers have pivoted. They're creating a market to preserve their profits in elephant killing.

This deadly black-market tactic is just emerging, according to Tanzania's park authority.

Wildlife traffickers have plenty of practice in pitching animal parts as "traditional medicine." Claims that rhino horn and pangolin scales can cure everything from cancer to arthritis have decimated rhino populations and turned pangolins into the world's most trafficked mammal. It's no surprise they're planning the same fate for elephants.

Thankfully, we still have a double matching gift opportunity to inject urgent resources into our lifesaving programs – as well as first responders like you who know the value of Africa's beloved wildlife. But with only two days left to double your gift, we may not be able to respond fast enough. Please, without delay, help save elephants.

I know this news is difficult to read in a year with so many other emergencies going on. But this rising threat is amplified by the fact that COVID-19 has slashed wildlife protection budgets. Our resources, too, are strained – in fact, we're facing budget shortfalls.

The cruel weapons once used to control Jai...A bullhook and brutal spiked chains (be prepared, I gagged and almost yacked 5 times this AM when posting these gross pictures)

Because of your kind support, the spiked chains on Jai's legs have been permanently removed. The source of his constant piercing pain is gone and now his healing can begin. We have a dedicated veterinary team spending hours with him every day, devoted to healing his wounds, reducing his agony and slowly earning his trust. Daily laser therapy, topical medicines and a specialized diet are being used to hasten the healing of his abscesses and wounds. Already there are visible improvements. However, many of these sores are deep and chronic and will need months of persistent treatment to finally close. CHECK OUT JAI'S ELEPHANT RESCUE AND CARE Although Jai’s pain levels can be difficult to gauge, we know from the many crippling pathologies we’ve been able to diagnose that it must be excruciating. He is being given strong pain relievers and pleasurable experiences, like high-pressure showers to combat his discomfort. Earning his trust will be the most challenging part. How do you convince an elephant who has only known cruelty, that there is such a thing as kindness? How do we make reparations for his past? These are difficult questions to answer, but hopefully, our everyday actions will show him that we care and are devoted to him. ELEPHANT RESCUE AND CARE

Jai is settling in and becoming more comfortable in his new home.

When our rescue team first met Jai, he was bound in spiked chains.

Initial treatment at the scene was challenging and critical.

His wounds were severe and infected, requiring extensive ongoing treatment.

Jai's wounds have improved significantly after just a week of loving treatment from our professional caregiver staff. X-rays show broken, partially fused bones in his swollen foot. ELEPHANT RESCUE AND CARE

Held captive in tiny enclosures, elephants suffer immensely at for-profit zoos, living out their entire lives trapped behind bars just for people's amusement. These gentle giants deserve freedom. And now there is hope for elephants in Canada with a new bill -- backed by the renowned Jane Goodall -- that would ban abusive captivity throughout the country, if passed. Sign the petition now urging the Canadian Senate to pass this trailblazing bill.

When allowed out of their prison-like cages, Canada's captive elephants are forced to perform for spectators and give exhausting rides to tourists, carrying heavy metal and wooden platforms on their backs all day long. These horrible conditions lead to increased cases of zoochosis -- or, profuse rocking, swaying, weaving, or pacing back and forth. Elephants are intelligent, social, gentle giants. And they deserve freedom and happiness. Sign the petition to end for-profit elephant captivity in Canada once and for all.

We hope these images give you a moment to catch your breath and enjoy some beautiful wildlife!

The 62-year-old Erika the elephant shown above has been in the Wildlife SOS family since 2013. She was a begging elephant who would walk the city by day earning money for her owner, and be chained on a street corner by night. Today she lives a happy life at the lush Elephant Rehabilitation Centre in Haryana. New this month, we also have mobile phone-optimized wallpaper! DOWNLOAD COMPUTER WALLPAPER OF ERIKA

New Kaavan Footage, Raju, Kalpana, Bijli & Maya's 10th Year of Freedom is the Elephant in the Room!

This is what a happy elephant looks like!

It was certainly a complicated task, but our team has managed to build a training crate for the giant at the Islamabad Zoo. Together with his team, our vet and mission leader, Dr Amir Khalil, is now spending all his time with the world’s loneliest elephant in order to prepare him for the upcoming relocation to Cambodia.

It is already dark and difficult to see, but we still want to make sure you are a part of this milestone – Kaavan stepping foot into the sanctuary in Cambodia for the first time. After a long journey from Pakistan, he was now able to leave his transport crate and enjoyed a warm welcome with a juicy fruitcake and a banana tree leaves trail made especially for him. Tomorrow, in the daylight, we will try to capture Kaavan getting to know his new friends. We really hope he will like his new home and adapt to the new environment.

We can’t stop watching this cute video of Kaavan exploring his new spacious home in Cambodia and enjoying the enrichment made especially for him. Now he is no longer bored, and it even seems like he is smiling. Don’t you agree?

Our rescue team spent months in Islamabad to prepare for Kaavan’s transfer to Cambodia. This week we made the impossible, possible, and our hard work together with the Pakistani community, US-superstar Cher and her NGO, Free The Wild, finally paid off... what an emotional roller-coaster ride for us all! Our hopes for Kaavan are that he will be able to enjoy many years at his new home and have an elephantastic life!

After eight long years, Kaavan is finally able to interact with other elephants once again. In his new and forever home in Cambodia, he is slowly getting to know the other giants in the neighbouring enclosure. Of course, he still needs time to fully adapt to his new environment, and we can only imagine how overwhelming this time must be for him. But we are hopeful and are already seeing the positive changes in him. But our work is not over yet – we are returning to Pakistan to relocate the last animals from the Marghazar Zoo. Please keep donating for our mission...http://bit.ly/pakistan-zoo

Maya Enjoys a Jumbo Feast on her 10th Rescueversary

Our beloved Maya celebrates ten years of freedom today! Maya had spent decades being abused and forced to perform at a circus. In 2010, #WildlifeSOS rescued Maya from this cruel life so she could live a healthy and kinder one at the #ElephantConservationandCareCentre in Mathura. To celebrate her special day, organised a jumbo feast by the riverside for Maya and best best friend Phoolkali! Bijli Celebrates 10 Years of Freedom with Wildlife SOS!

Bijli was a #begging elephant in Uttar Pradesh who was rescued by #WildlifeSOS in 2010. She survived a brutal road accident that left with an injured hind leg and a diffused joint, permanently affecting her gait.

With dedicated treatment, her injuries healed with time and her psychological healing was aided by the companionship of her best friends Chanchal and Laxmi.

To commemorate Bijli's 10th #rescue anniversary, our veterinarians and elephant care staff put together a ‘jumbo feast’ for Bijli and her friends!

Once hopeless, Raju’s spirit has soared

After 50 years in brutal captivity, Raju the elephant had lost all hope. He had suffered decades of abuse at the end of a spiked chain around his leg. Raju’s rescue and freedom in 2014 brought him to tears, and the world cried with him. He became known as the “crying elephant.” Today Raju is living at a Wildlife SOS sanctuary, where he is undergoing treatment for his significant chronic physical and psychological injuries. Under the watchful eye of his caregivers, Raju has shown considerable improvement. But it’s Raju’s spirit that has truly soared, thanks to compassionate supporters like you.

Priyanka is safe and living in peace

Priyanka is safe and living in peace - For more than 40 years Priyanka spent her days on the busy streets begging for scraps at the hands of her cruel owner. She was forced to give rides for money, even as her feet were burned on hot pavement and her back was deformed by a heavy saddle. Losing all hope, Priyanka faced constant fear of beatings, traffic, hunger, and chains. Once she arrived at Wildlife SOS, Priyanka’s many physical injuries were treated, but the emotional damage she suffered still haunts her. Priyanka is now well cared for, is loved, and lives in peace and safety at a Wildlife SOS sanctuary, thanks to compassionate people like you. This Giving Tuesday, please support Wildlife SOS and our mission to rescue and help elephants in need. With your help we can save more elephants like Priyanka! Don’t wait, please give today! #givingtuesday

Removing Arya's Last Symbol of Slavery

Arya joined the #Wildlife SOS elephant family this past summer. The blind and traumatized #elephant has made steady progress as she becomes more comfortable with her new surroundings. The removal of her bell signifies the symbolic act of removing the remainder of Arya’s painful and brutal past, shedding the remnants of her former life as she transitions into a kinder one with us.Join us as we help Arya say goodbye to the last symbol of her harsh past. If you would like to donate towards Arya's on-going care, please visit: https://bit.ly/3hHfTZl
